The RHYO
Community Programme
We are currently leasing ground for our portacabin and shipping container on the ground behind Lockerbie Ice-Rink. The RH Youth Organisation Board now feel that we should lease all the ground behind Lockerbie Ice- Rink for 10 years. Our next big project is to launch our Community Programme that would require most of the land to develop activities for the community and our young people.
The RHYO Community Programme
Community Recreation Project
We hope that this component of the Community Programme will make small
aspects of lives in the community easier for those struggling. We aim to work
closely with the local community to ensure the services that we provide
always are appropriate and relevant to the public’s interest.
Initially, we believe a dog walking path - that leads to a dog exercise paddock.
We would also like to build an adventure park which will be all made out of natural materials we hope to include a wheelchair swing so everyone can enjoy
the facilities. Furthermore, we will add a nature trail with sensory equipment
and bug hotels on the site which will allow children and their families to
enhance their outdoor learning experience.
Food for Thought Project (Breakfast Club & Food Bank)
A Breakfast Club would be open Mondays & Fridays 8.00am-9.00am. The
premises will be easily accessible for all those who live in Lockerbie and the
surrounding area and we can offer a healthy, nutritious meal to children on
their way to school. We are aiming to have this paid for through funding and
donations from shops to help reduce food waste. We understand the
importance of children arriving at school having had a healthy breakfast and
the impact it has on their ability to concentrate and be ready to learn. We
want to provide an equitable source which would address poverty and
deprivation allowing children and young people a level stance on which to
learn and achieve.
The Food Bank would be a collection of household products/food that will
be available to all those who need them. For any families/individuals who are
needing assistance, we hope that we can create a welcoming environment
where these individuals can come into our base, during designated hours,
and take whatever stock they need, free of charge. Food for Thought will also
include feminine hygiene products to help combat period poverty. We do not
want any families in the area, whether members of the organisation or not, to
have to go without household essentials in their home. We hope that this
component of the Community Programme will make small aspects of lives in
the community easier for those struggling. We are going to create a stock room for all the stock received from donations. Our Young People will lead this project by having a target at each month to bring one item in a week to reach the target of 100 items.
Dog Exercise Paddock
On the land that we use for our sessions and events we have noticed that there have been a few dog walkers on the site. We do not want to upset any local residents that walk their dogs on the land, so we have put this into consideration by adding a path alongside the land that will lead them to a dog exercise paddock where they can safely let their dogs off in a fenced off area, to keep them safe from traffic or other distractions for dogs being off the lead. Along the path they can find some fun activities to do like a sensory area for families, observe bird boxes, take part in a bug’s hotel with magnifying glasses, go through our willow tunnel etc.
Gardening Project- RHYO ECO Group
We would like to create small plots of flower beds, vegetable patches and tree planting areas. Young people will create their own gardens and be proud of something that they own/maintain. By having a well-maintained flower bed is not only pretty to look at but also helpful to the creatures that rely on it. Healthy plants and flowers attract birds, bees, and butterflies, for whom the species in the flower beds might be a source of food or shelter. Vegetable patches will be an encouragement to our young people to eat healthy and try out new vegetables. We can grow them to sell them or eat them for a cooking project in our sessions. In our awards programme there are sections were young people are to grow flowers and vegetables.
Archery Project
Archery will be a fantastic asset to the young people in the organisation, community groups and businesses.
-
RHYO Young people will have free access to archery through our sessions.
-
We would introduce archery to the Schools Programme, Pupils will be able to do more in physical education by having this opportunity.
-
The community will have opportunities to come along and try out archery every 3-4 months for free, if this activity is on popular demand there will be a very small charge of £2.00 - £5.00 per person.
-
We would have a business package we would open archery and other team building activities. Teamwork activities may include -
-

The physical, mental and wellbeing benefits of archery-
Archery requires focus, strength and determination - Whether you’re a performance athlete or just having a go, archery is great for body and mind. Top archers train daily for many hours at a time, but even for recreational archers, the health benefits of archery are clear. Shooting takes concentration, calming your mind as you focus on the target, and can mean that any worries you have are left aside while at the range.
Ten RHYO Volunteers will go through instructor training courses to provide these activities.
For the first steps of Archery we would like to introduce ‘Soft Archery’
soft archery programme, Arrows Archery, is a safe and fun way to introduce the joy of archery in schools, care homes, extra curricular clubs or to anyone who can’t make it to their local range. Using suction cup arrows, participants learn new skills in a safe environment, working on building strength and coordination while having fun doing something a little out of the ordinary.
Cresta Run
Is a wooden structure that is built on a hill to give a gentle slope for sledges on wheels to go down. We want to construct a two laned cresta run that will be open to events, open days and our sessions.
Large grass areas
The large grass areas will provide space for our session activities, session camp space and event space and for the community use (picnics, safe dog exercising etc).
Events that the land is used for
We hold a number of events on the land for the community & surrounding areas. Events as follows- Easter Event, Lockerbie Gala Fun Day, RHYO Activity Day, Halloween event, Fireworks night, Christmas Event. Which are all very well attended.
